Mueller Nicholls and Malcolm Davis Architects Win National Remodeling Award

steve

Mueller Nicholls and Malcolm Davis Architects have won top honors in the best green remodeling category in the seventeenth annual Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence.

Sustainability was the key consideration for the project, which completely renovated a four-story home in the Oakland Hills. Malcolm Davis designed a small but effective addition, giving the perception of considerably more space. The team used many different green building techniques and materials, including a photovoltaic solar system, recycled blue-jean insulation, natural light to augment the highly efficient lighting, hydronic radiant heating, a high-efficiency fireplace, water-efficient landscaping, FSC certified framing lumber, salvaged lumber for cantilevered shelving, passive cooling from natural cross ventilation, and 50% diversion of waste from the construction project. The spaces were planned specifically to allow for flexible use over the next couple of generations, while the children are young (currently) and later allowing for scaling back to living on fewer floors. The clean and timeless design sense will look fresh for generations to come.

“This was the first year they have entered the awards, and to take home top honors on the first attempt is impressive,” says Ken Kanline, Director of the Awards.

The Chrysalis awards salute winning projects selected from over 475 entries. Check out the Chrysalis Website and Qualified Remodeler Magazine for more information about our award-winning project!
